Welcoming the Nordics to Manchester
A Manchester walking tour for an inspired Finnish delegation showcasing the exciting urbanism and regeneration the city is delivering.
Layer.studio was proud to recently co-host a comprehensive walking tour of Manchester's latest urban regeneration and public space achievements, alongside Ramboll, LandsecU+I, Bruntwood scitech and Manchester City Council. The tour welcomed a multidisciplinary delegation from Finland, offering an in-depth look at the city's dynamic transformation through innovative urbanism, development, and landscape design.
Working closely with Ramboll's multidisciplinary specialists and Manchester City Council's growth team, we curated a route that highlighted diverse projects – from revitalised historic areas (Ancoats) now boasting high-quality public realm and green infrastructure (such as Mayfield Park), to cutting-edge new developments integrating significant landscape design and sustainable urban drainage systems (see Sister).
The Finnish delegation expressed keen interest and admiration for the scale, ambition, and quality of the regeneration projects showcased, noting particular interest in Manchester's approach to mixing heritage with contemporary design, reuse of historic waterways and railways, and the exciting cadence and rhythm this mix of heritage, scale and activity can bring. This positive feedback underscored the international relevance of Manchester's progress and provided a valuable opportunity for mutual learning and exchange on best practices in urban development and landscape design.
Layer.studio is committed to contributing to the creation of thriving urban landscapes for people and nature. Co-hosting this tour was a privilege, allowing us to not only showcase Manchester's remarkable journey but also to foster international dialogue and collaboration in the pursuit of better cities.
