our chillingham road: rain garden
From an empty street-end to a vibrant urban oasis
A new sustainable drainage retrofit scheme has revitalised a space adjacent to a busy high street and Chillingham Road Primary School. This inviting pocket park now boasts rain gardens, tree planting, permeable paving, seating, habitat features, and informal play, offering both the public and the primary school a refreshing green space.
We’re making public space go green
Layer Studio were commissioned to develop detailed design proposals for spatial interventions which will be exemplar of the wider changes which could be made to realise the vision for inclusive, healthy and vibrant high streets. The location next to the primary school was identified as it was covered by paving, adding little to the feel and environmental quality of the high street, and suffered from surface water flooding. A multidisciplinary team of consultants led by Harper Perry developed and delivered early engagement workshops with Year 6 children from Chillingham Road Primary School, considering design features for the space which might appeal to many different users, including people and wildlife.

The scheme is part of Newcastle East High Streets, a transformation project aiming to revitalise five high streets in the east of the city.
The project is led by Newcastle City Council and funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund with the North East Combined Authority as the lead authority.
