Climate Innovation District
City centre low carbon living in Leeds
The Climate Innovation District is a landmark £250m sustainable residential development located on a former industrial brownfield site along the River Aire in Leeds. Spanning six acres, it is the largest sustainable project of its kind in the UK, delivering over 500 low-carbon, timber-frame homes. Layer.studio served as the landscape architects, transforming a derelict site into a vibrant, pedestrian-first urban neighborhood that priorities nature and community well-being.

Climate Resilience as Standard
Layer.studio designed a climate-resilient public realm that integrates complex engineering with natural beauty. We implemented a comprehensive Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS), including rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable street surfaces that slow and treat water before it reaches the river.

We’re putting people and nature first.
By concealing parking beneath a sculpted, reinforced landscape, we reclaimed the surface for people. We designed "Secret Gardens" and multi-functional detention basins that double as play areas during dry weather. We introduced wildflower meadows and edible planting beds, and preserved mature trees while adding new native species to create a tiered "forest floor" effect. We believe in creative solutions that balance the need of nature and people in cities.

Connectivity Design: Our work ensured seamless integration with a new custom footbridge across the River Aire, linking the district to the wider Leeds city center.

Climate Innovation Legacy
The project is an exemplar of "sponge city" design. It works because the landscape is never just decorative; every square meter performs a task—whether that is mitigating flood risk, providing a habitat for local pollinators, or creating a safe, vehicle-free social space for children to play.
