Climate Innovation District
City centre low carbon living in Leeds
Nestled next to the River Aire, the Climate Innovation District is a collection of 200 homes that sit within six acres of communal gardens and green spaces. Working as the landscape architects for the Climate Innovation District, our vision was to transform a derelict industrial site into a sustainable, vibrant, and resilient urban neighbourhood that harmoniously integrates nature with urban living.

Putting People and Nature First
Our primary objective was to create a pedestrian-friendly environment that encourages walking and cycling, thereby reducing reliance on vehicles. We achieved this by designing car-free streets and concealing parking beneath a sculpted landscape, which allowed us to dedicate more surface area to green spaces and communal gardens.

Integration with Natural Elements
The proximity to the River Aire provided an opportunity to integrate natural elements into the urban fabric. We developed riverside parks and meadows along the riverbank, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and offering residents direct access to nature.

Sustainability and Future-Proofing
Our design aligns with the broader goals of the Climate Innovation District to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable living. By creating a walkable, green, and socially engaging environment, we have set a precedent for future urban developments aiming to address the challenges of climate change.
