High quality residential scheme inspired by the local Peak District landscape
Layer.studio’s design ethos for this site is rooted in the ambition to create naturally inspired environments. Each character area is shaped by this guiding principle, blending style with purpose. The approach is nature-based and functionally driven, recognising the critical role of water—its movement, flow, and retention—in shaping the landscape. Planting strategies build upon Sheffield’s strong tree heritage, incorporating a thoughtful mix of large pines, deciduous trees, and smaller ornamental multi-stems to enhance ecological richness. Set within this landscape are generous areas designed for play, relaxation, social connection, and quiet retreat, ensuring a harmonious experience for both people and nature.
A DESIGN INSPIRED BY THE FAR REACHING VIEWS OF THE PEAK DISTRICT LANDSCAPE
This concept is driven by ambition to enhance and reflect local landscape vernacular and processes. This means bringing in some of the 'wild' from the surrounding peak district.
WALLED GARDENS AND FRAMING VIEWS
The site historically housed a diverse mix of uses, including a Home for the Poor, allotments, a hospital clinic, General Post Office stores yard, and a grinding works. Crucially, the north of the site was used for recreation and for a longtime was grassland. Traditionally, this space has existed to connect communities in a green outdoor setting, and this philosophy can drive its new design, creating a landscape where people and nature thrive.
The stone wall that historically surrounds the development will be mostly retained, with punctuaitions throughout to create permeable entries and viewpoints.
