Chillingham Road Rain Garden
From an empty Newcastle street-end to a vibrant community oasis
A new sustainable drainage retrofit scheme has revitalised a space adjacent to a busy high street and Chillingham Road Primary School. This inviting pocket park now boasts rain gardens, tree planting, permeable paving, seating, habitat features, and informal play, offering both the public and the primary school a refreshing green space.
A multidisciplinary team of consultants led by Harper Perry developed and delivered early engagement workshops with Year 6 children from Chillingham Road Primary School, considering design features for the space which might appeal to many different users, including people and wildlife. Layer Studio delivered all stages of work through to construction and delivery, passing the construction package to Newcastle City Council’s in-house team of contractors.
