A walking tour around Leeds' Climate Innovation District

Experience is best served first hand. That is why we stepped away from the exhibition stands, gathered a fantastic group from our circ_it event, and took to the 'streets' for a guided walking tour of the Climate Innovation District (CID).

When thousands of the built environment’s finest gathered in Leeds this year for UKREiiF, the conversation inside the pavilions was understandably dominated by the future of sustainable infrastructure and climate adaptation. But at Layer.studio, we know that the best way to understand resilient placemaking is to experience it firsthand.

Located on a former industrial brownfield site along the River Aire, this pioneering £250m development is the largest of its kind in the UK. Taking our circ_it cohort through the site provided a brilliant opportunity to bridge the gap between high-level circular economy theory and on-the-ground reality. We wanted to show the group exactly what a pedestrian-first, nature-led neighborhood looks and feels like when it is functioning at full capacity.

‍

The core focus of our tour was the district's advanced flood resilience and climate adaptation strategies. With changing weather patterns bringing more intense rainfall, modern urban landscapes must work harder than ever.

We walked the group through our "sponge city" design approach, demonstrating how the public realm is engineered to manage water proactively rather than reactively. Highlights from the tour included:

  • Integrated SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems): We explored the rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable street surfaces that catch, slow, and naturally treat rainwater before it ever reaches the River Aire.
  • Multi-Functional Landscapes: The group saw firsthand how our detention basins are designed to hold excess water during heavy downpours, yet seamlessly double as safe, vehicle-free play areas and social spaces for residents during dry weather.
  • Reclaiming the Surface: By concealing parking beneath a sculpted, reinforced landscape, we explained how we were able to prioritise human-scale living.

‍

This year’s UKREiiF reminded us that the industry is ready to embrace bolder, more authentic environmental solutions. Revisiting the CID with our peers reinforced our core belief at Layer.studio: designing for climate resilience doesn't mean compromising on beauty or community connection. When we balance the big picture with fine-grained detail, we create places where both people and the planet can truly thrive.
